A fluorescent lamp is filled with mercury vapor with the inner surface coated with a fluorescent coating. This coating will emit visible light when short wave UV light – generated by the gas-discharge exited mercury atoms – hit the coating. The fluorescent lamp produces more light than an incandescent lamp. Also heat production is much lower
